COURSE TITLE: Exploratory Art
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an introductory class designed to develop students
visual awareness of the elements of art and to incorporate these in
finished projects. Students will be studying Primitive man, Cave
Dwellers, Egyptians, Romans, Indian, and Oriental cultures and
their lifestyles. Projects: masks, kites, shields, portraits, clay,
computer art, foil, textiles, sand painting, drawing, painting, and
paper making.
COURSE TITLE: Exploratory Art
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an introductory class designed to make students
aware of the elements of art. Students will be taught a new method
of seeing and observing objects in their environment. Projects:
contour drawing, tempera painting, pen and ink, weaving, print
making, portraits, clay pottery, computer art, plaster molds, paper
making, wire sculpture, sand casting, and group painting.
COURSE TITLE: Art I
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course demonstrates an understanding of the use of principles
of design, in addition to previous concepts. The students will
continue developing new skills and new use of materials. Projects:
print making, pottery, acrylics, weaving, tie-dye, perspective,
color theory, sculpture, batik, carving, wood burning, sand
casting, & wire sculpture and computer art. (There will also be
group projects in painting, clay and sculpture).
COURSE TITLE: Art II GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE
DESCRIPTION: Students will continue advancing their skills
using the elements of art and principles of art by applying these
to various units by looking at artist. Portrait units: cartooning,
animation, flip books; Clay Unit: coil, slab, glass construction;
Op Art Unit: printmaking, plaster casting, sand casting, mold
making; Textile Unit: tie-dye, batik, weaving, pen and ink;
Sculpture Unit: wood sculpture, papier-mache' molds, printmaking,
computer art, and Painting Unit: painted furniture, marbleizing,
drip, and objects, water-colors, tempera, and acrylics; and Graphic
Art: logo, business cards, letter heads, and product designs. Back

Band
COURSE TITLE: Beginning Band
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This
comprehensive band class will guide students through a process of
learning how to play a musical instrument. Students will learn
music History and Theory as well as being introduced to multi
cultural segments and composer biographies. Students will go
through a detailed week long introduction of the instrument
families with demonstrations and 'hands on' experience and will
then select an instrument at the end of the first or second week.
Beginning band students will perform in concert 2-4 times during
the year.
COURSE TITLE: Intermediate Band
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course
is designed to build on the basic fundamentals learned in beginning
band. Musicianship and technical skills are emphasized and applied
through ensemble performance. The 7th grade band will perform in
concert 3-4 times a year.
COURSE TITLE: Advanced Band GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE
DESCRIPTION: Advanced band is the only ensemble that meets
daily. The students will experience; Marching Band, Jazz Band,
Concert Band and Solo and Ensembles. The 8th grade students will
have the opportunity to participate in honor band, concerts and
school functions. This ensemble is designed to prepare students for
high school band. A uniform fee may be required. The 8th grade
band will perform in concert 3-4 times a year.

Computers
COURSE TITLE: Computer Applications
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will be exposed to application software including
database, spreadsheets, drawing, painting, and word processing.
Students will also learn Movie Maker, basic computer knowledge,
Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Publisher. This course will use
the Dell lab. Length - 1 semester.
COURSE TITLE: 6th Keyboarding
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will
learn correct keyboarding techniques and basic word processing and
computer operations on both Macintosh and IBM computers.
COURSE TITLE: 7th Keyboarding
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this
12-week class, students will reinforce correct technique along with
speed and accuracy building. More in-depth word processing and
computer operations on both Macintosh and IBM computers will be
learned. Areas covered: language arts (capitalization and number
expression), proofreading, and introductions to keying personal
notes, memos, letters, outlines, reports, and tables.
COURSE TITLE: 8th Keyboarding and Computer Applications
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This one
semester elective class builds on the keyboarding skills learned in
the 6th and 7th grades. More in-depth and complicated material will
be formatted including personal notes, letters, reports with
footnotes, tables with centered headings, memos, outlines, order
forms, and other basic business forms. Students will also learn how
to use spreadsheets and a database. Emphasis will be placed on
speed and accuracy building on the keyboard and keypad, along with
proofreading and correcting work. This class will be taught on a

COURSE TITLE: English
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will
develop and expand skills in grammar, usage, reading, writing,
spelling, and communication. A portfolio will be used to keep all
writing assignments. A three-week short story unit is presented in
the spring.
COURSE TITLE: English
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In eighth
grade English, students will study all areas of their native
language, mastering many skills presented in elementary grades and
developing new skills as well. Areas of study include spelling and
vocabulary; mechanics of capitalization and punctuation; grammar
and usage; simple, compound, and complex sentences; composition of
paragraphs and essays; literature, particularly short stories and
drama; and free reading for enjoyment. A unit about the history of
English and its use in our contemporary world is also included.
COURSE TITLE: Journalism
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In
Journalism, students will read and analyze newspapers and news
magazines and learn about news production. Students will also write
different types of news articles and publish a school newspaper.
Students will learn to use a desktop publishing program. A
photography unit will include analyzing strong pictures, learning
about cameras, taking photos, and inserting photos into documents.
One or more field trips will be included.
COURSE TITLE: Yearbook
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will create the YMS yearbook. In
this course students will plan the appearance and theme of the
yearbook, select pictures, design layouts, and write all headlines,
captions, and paragraphs to be published. Students will create
pages on the computer and learn to work with digital photography
and graphics.

is a basic skill building course designed to increase competence in

& Consumer Sciences
COURSE TITLE: Exploratory Family & Consumer Sciences
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of
concepts within the Family and Consumer Sciences field. F.C.S.
focuses on preparing individuals for life and work, strengthening
families, and enabling communities. Students will be actively
involved in learning the skills and processes needed for successful
family living such as: teamwork, family relationships, child care,
citizenship, food preparation and healthy lifestyles. Students will
do a variety of hands-on activities including constructing a
recycling bag and food laboratory experiences.

GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of
concepts within the Family and Consumer Sciences field. F.C.S.
focuses on preparing individuals for life and work, strengthening
families, and enabling communities. Students will be actively
involved in learning the skills and processes that are needed for
responsible family living such as: communication, responsible
decision-making, family strengths, conflict resolution, resource
management, consumerism, citizenship, and foods & nutrition.
During the 12-week period, students will be putting their skills
into action by completing projects such as quilts for babies in
need and food laboratory experiences.
COURSE TITLE: Food & Wellness
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course
is for any 8th grade student who has not previously taken the
course. It is designed to provide students with a basic background
in food and wellness. Students will use a variety of skills and
processes to explore food decisions, nutrition, weight control,
eating disorders, world hunger, advertising, food labeling,
conflicting information, recycling, resource management, food
preparation, and meal management.
COURSE TITLE: Teen Living
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class
has been developed for any eighth grade student. During the
semester course, students will explore relationship qualities on a
personal, peer, and family base while practicing problem solving,
decision making, and communication techniques. Emphasis through
this course is placed on making healthy choices and decisions to a

Foreign
Language
COURSE TITLE: German GRADE
COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will be
introduced to the German language and culture. Vocabulary units may
include numbers, days, months, colors, simple phrases, the house,
German-speaking countries, occupations, parts of the body, familiar
animals, classroom commands and objects, etc. Films about Germany
and its people and culture will be shown as available.
COURSE TITLE: Spanish
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This
nine-week course is designed to provide foreign exposure. The
students will experience the process of language learning by the
study techniques suggested, the vocabulary introduced and used
through the course and the cultural subjects discussed. We will
also talk about careers which use a foreign language. At the
completion of Exploratory Spanish, the students will have an
awareness of what is involved in studying a foreign language. Based
on this experience, the student will be able to make a
knowledgeable decision about further language study. Topics of
study may include: greetings and expression of courtesy, cognates,
alphabet, classroom objects, numbers, geography, stereotypes,
colors, weather and seasons, and days and months. Back

General Music and
Choir
COURSE TITLE: General Music
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course
is designed to provide students with a basic background in music
history, notation, beginning composition, and music of other
cultures. Through hands-on activities, homework assignments, and
tests, students will practice their skills as music listeners,
composers, and active participants. The class will alternate every
other day with Choir or Study Hall. Length: 1 Semester COURSE
TITLE: 7th Grade General Music
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This class is designed to provide students with a basic background
in music history, notation, and composition. Through hands-on
activities, homework assignments, and tests, students will practice
their skills as music listeners, composers, and active
participants. This class meets every other day. Length: 1 Semester
COURSE TITLE: Choir
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a
full year class for all 6th grade students who like to be active
participants in class and want a chance to express their musical
abilities and creativity in the "spotlight". The class focuses on
improving singing, performing, and music reading skills. Literature
may include jazz, pop, Broadway, multi-cultural, or children's
choir styles. Choreography may also be included. This group
performs in at least 3 concerts a year of which one may be a
mini-musical. Students may also have the opportunity to participate
in honor choirs around the state. This class alternates with band,
general music, or study hall. Length: Full Year
COURSE TITLE: Choir
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class is
a full year class open to all 7th grade students and meets the
music requirement. This is a continuation of 6th grade choir with
emphasis on improving music reading skills, and expressing yourself
through singing and performing. We sing several different styles of
music including Broadway, pop, jazz, classical, and music of other
countries. Some choreography may also be included. The group
performs 3 concerts a year, which include a talent show &
musical. Students also have the opportunity to participate in honor
choirs around the state. This class meets every other day. Length:

COURSE TITLE: Choir GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This class is a continuation of 7th grade choir.
Emphasis is on performing and preparing for high school choir which
does include the ability to read music. Students perform in 3
concerts a year, including a talent show & musical as well as
some performances in the community. Several honor choir
opportunities are available to students in this course. This class
meets 3 days a week alternating with 8th grade swing choir or study
hall. Students must be enrolled in choir to be eligible to audition
for the swing choir, Expressions. Auditions are held in the fall.

COURSE TITLE: Health/P.E.
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Health - We will try to put emphasis on prevention, a
focus on motivation at long range and short range positive health
behaviors. Major topics covered: Learning to be healthy; relating
to others; growth and development; physical exercise and physical
fitness; dental health; nutrition and your habits; five senses;
your body systems; having a disability or a handicap; wise
consumer; and the physical examination. Drugs and alcohol and
tobacco; first aid and safety; and your environment. Physical
Education - We will condition alternating days: running,
flexibility, jumping, and testing with activities which include:
soccer, volleyball, juggling, basketball/team handball, new games,
and base soccer.

GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Health - AIDS
...TB...Drug Abuse...this is an age when getting a message through
to students may mean the difference between life and death, a
bright future or one filled with little hope. 7th grade Health is
packed with all of the important information students need to
develop lifelong healthy habits. Thought provoking units focus on
nutrition, drugs, fitness, the environment and other essential
topics, and give students the tools they need to discuss the issues
that affect their lives. Students who exercise and eat right are
happier and more alert, and perform better in school They suffer
less depression and anxiety, and they miss fewer days of school
They enjoy school more. Without a doubt, drugs are the most serious
problem afflicting our youngsters today. 7th grade Health can help
you combat this terrible problem. 7th grade Health not only explain
the effects of drugs, but also help students overcome peer pressure
to use them. Learning about emotional health is important too. 7th
grade Health covers self-esteem, depression, fears and phobias,
shyness, rejection, how to make friends, and how to recognize
suicidal behavior. You learn how the environment impacts healthy
living. 7th grade Health provides you with challenging discussion
topics relating environmental health to personal health. 7th grade
Health also provides a focus on the physiology of adolescence,
sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, and peer pressure. Physical
Education - We cover a wide variety of individual - dual and team
sports, with an emphasis on lifetime recreation. We will condition
alternating days off: running, flexibility, jumping, testing with
activities which include: Ultimate, volleyball, juggling, floor
hockey and polo/global games and base soccer.

GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: We will cover
areas of physical conditioning, team sports, recreational
activities, social activities, lifetime activities. These are all
major topics covered in co-ed 8th grade. Physical education is one

Industrial Technology
COURSE TITLE: Exploratory Block/Industrial Technology
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Industrial Technology at the sixth grade level is a 9 week
course dealing with an introductory exploration of several areas in
industrial technology. Students will have a chance to choose four
of the nine areas offered to them for exploration. Each area of
study is set up for two weeks (10 days). Students will use
computers to access the curriculum through CD ROM presentations in
most areas. Curriculum offerings at this level are aerodynamics,
airtrack, CAD, exploratory electronics, engineering and stress,
flight, fluid power, plastics and robotics.
COURSE TITLE: Exploratory Block/Industrial Technology
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Industrial
Technology at the seventh grade level is a twelve week course that
is designed to help students expand their knowledge in many areas
of technology. Students will have a chance to take any of the
modules that they didn't get as a sixth grader or choose some of
the new modules that weren't offered to them in the sixth grade. We
also will be doing a manufacturing project with the class as a
group. Curriculum for the modules will be presented through the
CD-ROM presentations along with the "hands on" projects that will
utilize the shop area. Curriculum offerings at the 7th grade are
aerodynamics, air track, CAD, electronics, engineering and stress,
flight, fluid power, robotics, radio broadcasting, CO2 raceway, CAC
lathe, and video production. COURSE TITLE: Exploratory
Technology GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Exploratory Technology at the eighth grade level is a one semester
course that will utilize all areas in the tech-lab. Students will
be able to take any of the modules that they didn't get as a 6th or
7th grader. More advanced study, problem solving and hands on
activities will highlight the areas of curriculum. CAC programming
and machining for the lathe and mill will be added to the course
offerings. Along with the module setting for the curriculum
presentations, some form of a group activity from the technology
field will also be part of the course in which all students will
participate.
COURSE TITLE: Manufacturing/Transportation - MT 7000
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course students will start out in the area of
mechanical drafting. Basic drafting and drawing techniques will be
emphasized with regard to mechanical drawing. Students will then
have the opportunity to apply these skills to a computer-aided
drafting program, Autos ketch. This CAD program will help students
see just how important computers and computer-aided drafting can be
to industry. Then students can apply these drafting skills to help
design projects using the CAC lathe and mill. Students will write,
verify, edit and run computer controlled machines to make their
projects. In the area of transportation, students will have the
opportunity to work with a two-horse, four-cycle, Briggs and
Station engine for exploration. A complete disassembly and
reassembly of the engine will be performed by each student. At the
completion of this unit, students will have a good understanding of
the systems that make an engine run.
COURSE TITLE: Communications/Construction - CC 7100
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course
will start out with a drafting unit covering isometric and
orthographic drawings. Students will work on drawing selected views
of an object and three dimensional views of objects. The background
of being able to read dimensions will then lead into the
construction unit. Here students will have the opportunity to work
in the area of woods to construct a project. Students will usually
be able to select their own project to work on. The plans, the plan
of procedure, the construction and finishing are all done by the
students. At the completion of this unit, students will have gained
a basic understanding of how the construction process works in
making a project, using the power tools out in the shop. Back

COURSE TITLE: Individualized Math
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6-8 by
teacher placement COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class is a small group or independent study. The goal is
to improve basic skills and meet the students' needs.
COURSE TITLE: 6th grade Math
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course
teaches computational skills using whole numbers, fractions and
decimals. Mental math and estimation are used in the processes. The
course also includes geometry, algebra with integers, statistics in
graphing and probability, ratios and proportions. Measurement
includes both customary and metric units.
COURSE TITLE: 7th grade Math
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course
reviews the computational skills involving whole numbers, decimals,
and fractions. Solving of equations is introduced. Students will
study elementary number theory, percent, geometry, and
integers.
COURSE TITLE: Algebra
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 or advanced placement students COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This is a high school algebra course. Advance
placements will be made by the math department.
COURSE TITLE: Pre Algebra
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 - 8 by teacher placement COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to Algebra. The
students learn how to solve problems using positive and negative
numbers, and rational numbers. They also begin solving equations
and inequalities. Units on geometric figures, ratio, proportion and
percent, areas, and volumes, statistics and probability are also

Reading
COURSE TITLE: Teen Literature and Newspaper GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED
TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The 7th grade Teen Lit curriculum is designed around the
literature-based Accelerated Reader program and its goal of
building a life-long love of reading in each student. The program
encourages students to read better books, to increase their
vocabulary and comprehension skills, to build on their higher level
thinking skills, and to motivate students to read more books. It
includes an in-depth study of the Omaha World Herald all four
quarters and intensified vocabulary work.
COURSE TITLE: Reading
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 and 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students participate in an individualized or small group program
that emphasizes decoding skills, comprehension skills, reference
and study skills, and literary skills. The goal of developing
independence in reading is enhanced by the series direct
correlation with the other language arts of listening, speaking,
and writing. Class activities include work on skills, silent and
oral reading, discussion, free reading, and book reports and

COURSE TITLE: Science
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Sixth grade science is a class which provides students with hands
on manipulative activities. These activities give the students an
opportunity to learn through observations by applying the
scientific method. They also give science theories a practical
foundation. The students will be able to build on the areas which
include: measuring length, volume and mass; the graphing of data;
and the study of matter.
COURSE TITLE: Life Science
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Seventh grade
science is a life science class for 2 semesters. The resource text
is Prentice-Hall Science Program. Included in Life Science are the
following topics: a detailed look at cells as organisms, their
structures, characteristics and the life processes for which they
are responsible in many-celled organisms; the five kingdoms of
living things and the characteristics upon which the classifying of
organisms is based; the mechanisms of heredity; and the
interactions of humans with their environment and the other
organisms on earth.
COURSE TITLE: Earth Science
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Earth
Science course includes astronomy, fossils, weather, volcanoes,
earthquakes, rocks and minerals, and the structure of matter. Many
of the activities are experiments performed by students. Back

GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 6 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The student will study geography, history, economics,
political science, and culture as it applies to various people and
places throughout the world.
COURSE TITLE: Geography
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 7 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Organized
around the five themes of geography, this course is a study of the
earth with an emphasis on both the physical and cultural
characteristics of the major regions of the world.
COURSE TITLE: History
GRADE COURSE IS OFFERED TO: 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In quarters
1, 2, and 3 the course is a detailed study of United States history
from prehistoric times through 1877 and a shorter review of the
period 1877 to present. In the fourth quarter, Nebraska History and
