Students Bake Up A Storm

5th Graders Learn About Turning Wheat into Bread

by Brock Franssen

December 01, 2008

The 5th graders of YES recently finished a unit on agriculture.  They learned about the various parts of a wheat plant. They also learned about the process that wheat undergoes from being a seed in the field to being bread on the table.  They learned the fascinating science behind turning flour (with the help of yeast) into bread. They learned about the chemical process that occurs when flour and yeast get together.

On November 21st, the students did some hands on learning as  they worked in groups to produce loaves of bread.  Eileen Krumbaugh of the Home Extension Office was the special visitor on hand to help the students with the art of bread making.

At the end of the day, a total of 88 loaves of bread were made with the help of parent/grandparent volunteers.   Mmmmm... fresh baked bread!
